CHAPTER THREE
When he read the next day’s newspapers, Harvey Glatman thanked his stars that he had followed his hunch and done away with Judy Dull after raping her. Her roommate, the two photographers with whom she had broken appointments, her estranged husband who still carried a torch for her, and a boyfriend with whom she had a dinner date, all had become concerned about her absence. When they discovered the phone number that “Johnny Glynn” had left was fictitious, they were sure Judy had fallen into the hands of a sex fiend. After making some futile phone calls around town, they had reported her disappearance to the West Hollywood sheriff’s station before midnight – just about the time Harvey was strangling Judy in the desert 130 miles away. The sheriff had broadcast an all-points bulletin the first thing that morning.
Harvey laid low. He grew a mustache, stopped wearing his glasses, and kept behind his apartment door. But he had plenty of things to occupy him. Developing and printing his pictures of Judy in his improvised darkroom, he trembled with excitement as he watched the well-remembered images come to light. Harvey had proved two things to his own satisfaction – that he could rape a woman, and that he could kill one. The double-barreled achievement gave his stunted ego a powerful charge.
On August 9, when Judy Dull failed to show up for her child custody hearing in Glendale, her husband, Robert, a newspaper pressman, declared he was convinced she had met with foul play. Sheriff’s Detective Sergeant David E. Ostroff of West Hollywood told reporters that he and his colleagues had checked out just about every possibility without turning up a single clue to her fate or a trace of a photographer called Johnny Glynn.
This convinced Harvey it was safe to try a repeat performance. He looked up another successful model, a dark-haired cover girl whose name and unlisted phone number he had picked up on his travels around town. Her apartment was only a block from Judy Dull’s. Harvey gave another phony name when he called her. But when he dropped over to her place to discuss a modeling job “on location out in the country,” he found the girl’s agent with her.
Both were immediately suspicious of the self-styled professional photographer’s nervous manner and glassy stare.
“He looked like he took dope,” they recalled later. When Harvey told the girl he wanted to speak to her privately, she insisted on her agent being present. After Harvey refused to say just what sort of pictures he wanted to take, the girl ordered him to leave. The experience set him back and made him wary again, but he couldn’t stop now.
He picked up two young prostitutes and took pictures of them tying each other up, but there wasn’t much fun in it.
